Doctors are clear - we know what causes a hangover. And the fact that although you feel ill to survive after drinking, the worse are the less noticeable but creeping effects that devastate the human body gradually.
The immediate consequences of a hangover are known to anyone who has ever exaggerated it with drinking - a crazy headache, muscles and joints, severe nausea, chills, headache, which makes it difficult to even walk on the sidewalk. While the long-term people think that this is actually one problem, namely liver cirrhosis.
But alcohol can do much more harm on several fronts at the same time. The list of organs of the human body, which it does not harm in any way, would probably be considerably shorter than the enumeration of those who are not twice worthy of alcohol.
When alcohol is healthy
It is becoming increasingly clear that regular drinking a small amount of alcohol is even healthier than when one avoids it altogether. “Studies have repeatedly shown that drinking small amounts of alcohol is healthy and has a positive effect on the circulatory system,” says Ostrava cardiologist and wine expert Martin Křístek. Not only that: in addition to slowing the hardening of the arteries, lowering cholesterol levels, wine also reduces the risk of blood vessels becoming clogged with blood clots. Surprisingly, it also turned out that a small amount of wine even protects the liver. The tannins contained in the wine stimulate digestion, testify to the digestive tract mucosa and have antibacterial effects.
It is generally believed that the healthiest alcohol is due to the minerals and cell-retardants contained in wine, a glass a day for women, and no more than two for men. But Křístek pointed out that healthy alcohol may be healthy as such, although scientists have failed to clarify the mechanism by which health benefits.
And not all doctors are cheering for such a celebration of alcohol: “Even the restrained drinking of alcohol will certainly not reduce the risk of heart disease in younger men, menopausal women, children and adolescents. This is simply because the risk is minimal for these groups of people, ”said Karel Nešpor.
The liver, heart and intestines suffer
Exceptionally, people living in Europe are able to metabolize alcohol, so after a glass of glass every day it is difficult for a hangover, but at the turn of the year reasonable rates are forgotten more often than ever. The result is a hangover. "There are several mechanisms involved in its creation, most of which will appear immediately, but some of the consequences of alcohol are rather long-term," says biochemist Tomáš Zima, Dean of the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University.
Alcohol, in addition to an immediate effect on behavior and, after a few hours, on digestion or headache, causes a reaction in the body, which can be compared to a kind of inflammation to which the body reacts similarly to infection. "It therefore washes out proteinaceous substances called cytokines, which can cause chronic damage to the body, especially the liver," explains biochemist Winter.
The liver is most at risk of dreaded cirrhosis - during which normal tissue has changed over time to fibrous scars, either chronic jaundice or drinking alcohol. The only treatment is liver transplantation. After all, the famous English football player George Best had to undergo it, but even the transplant martyrium did not force him to stop drinking.
Drinking Can Cause Cancer
Alcohol also increases the risk of other health problems where no one can look for a direct connection. Thus, the connection between uncommon drinking and breast cancer and, in particular, pancreatic, stomach and intestinal tumors is becoming more apparent. This risk is even higher if one smokes in addition to alcohol. Concerning the increased incidence of colon cancer in the Czech basin, it has been linked to beer drinking - head physician Miroslav Zaoral of Prague's Strešovice Hospital explained that the combination of beer and sausage is particularly dangerous because of the emergence of carcinogenic nitrogen compounds. Alcohol also increases the risk of cancer of the larynx, pharynx or esophagus.
Alcoholics have been shown to have thinner bones than people who tend to avoid alcohol, suffer from fertility problems - alcohol affects erection, and also damages sperm, threatens ovarian activity in women, thus reducing the possibility of being able to conceive without difficulty. child.
Alcohol drinkers also often have immune problems. This may be partly related to their overall lifestyle, where there is no time for healthy activities, but it is also a direct consequence of the fact that alcohol drains fluids from the body and washes away minerals and vitamins. Again, there is a direct link to smoking - those who smoke have an even weaker immunity.
Psyche vs. Alcohol
Alcohol also destroys brain cells. While it is not true that they cannot recover at all, it is still evident in people who drink over the long term that the devastating influence of alcohol on the brain, and consequently, on thinking. "," said Dr. Andreas Bartsch of the University of Würzburg, Germany, which this year completed research into brain damage by alcohol. Animal experiments have shown that alcohol may interfere with the development of new brain cells in adults. Excessive alcohol consumption during pregnancy can impair the baby's brain development.
And last but not least, alcohol affects the psyche, also in the short and long term. Immediately after drinking, some people increase aggression, others are regretful and so on. Long-term drinking of alcohol can lead to problems in the field of emotions and emotions, it can be said that drinkers are emotionally flat, do not feel emotions and cannot express or perceive them or react to them in their surroundings.
